Ladder Street, Hong Kong
Pen and ink, 9in. by 10.5in.
I took about 2 hours to do this drawing. At some point an old Chinese man sat down to chat. He was an artist from the mainland- somewhat depressed by being there, I gathered. At the time, (1986) reunification was still more than a decade away. The borders were far from transparent or open. No wonder he felt so marooned, seperated from everything he knew in the People’s Republic. Meetings with unlikely people happen from time to time when you’re out there sketching, and it makes the travelling life that much more interesting.
